Caribbean Golf Vacation with the PGA Tour

Need an idea for a Golf Vacation?  The PGA Tour is venturing into new territory this season.  During the week of March 20 to 23, the Tour will make a stop in Puerto Rico.  From a travelers standpoint, it's the best decision they've made in a long time.

Coco_beach_7_2 The Coco Beach Golf & Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico will play host to the Puerto Rico Open.  A compilation of the club's four distinct nine-hole layouts, designed by Tom Kite, will be used as the Open course.  The Coco Beach courses are obviously challenging enough for the best players in the world, but they also display the beauty of the Caribbean host nation.

Near the Coco Beach club is the Gran Meliá Puerto Rico Resort.  Accomodations at the resort are luxurious as any in the Caribbean.  Suites are available from $665 per night and up and each has numerous amenities.

The Gran Meliá resort is perfect for a family Caribbean vacation.  An amazing spa and wellness center, kids club, lagoon-style pool, lighted tennic courts, dance classes, casino, golf and tons of other activities.

The PGA Tour stops at some great locations, but this Golf Vacation Idea may top the list.

Traveling to England for the Open Championship

The Open Championship, or the British Open, as it's called in the United States, returns to Royal Birkdale this July.  If you're planning to make the trip, or simply "planning to plan," now is the time.

Royal Birkdale is located in Southport, England, just north of Liverpool.  Being near such an urban Changing_guards_2 center as Liverpool should provide traveler with a number of choices for lodging, even at this relatively late date.

As of today's date, there are at least a couple of hotels with rooms remaining for the Open Championship week, according to AboutBritain.com:

  • Holiday Inn, Haydock - Located between Liverpool and Manchester, certainly within commuting distance to the Open.  Rooms start at £135 per person.
  • Britannia Adelphi - Located in Liverpool.  This hotel was first built to accomodate passengers of the Titanic.  Rooms start at £64 per person.

Both hotels were given 4-star ratings by AboutBritain.com.

As for attractions, virtually everything in Britain is within a relatively short rail trip.  In Northwest England, there are six castles, 15 gardens, two amusement parks, 54 museums, and lots of beautiful countryside, just to name a few things.

Time is of the essence if you want to see the Open Championship and stay nearby.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort

Most every avid golfer remembers the 1991 Ryder Cup Matches, since called the "War by the Shore." The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort will forever be famous for that battle, which wentOcean_course_4_3 down to the last putt on the last hole of the last match on the last day. When Bernhard Langer's six-footer for par slid just by the right lip, the most gut-wrenching Ryder Cup in history came to a dramatic and emotional end with the United States posting a one-point victory.

The Ocean Course has since hosted multiple World Cup and Warburg Cup events.  It is, quite simply, Ocean_course_45 one of the golf courses you must play.  The 7,296 yard, par 71 Ocean Course stretches nearly three miles along the Atlantic Ocean at the extreme eastern end of Kiawah Island.  On a layout that is reminiscent of the great seaside links of England and Scotland, yardage can vary as much as the wind that constantly sweeps across the links.  But don't forget, there are four other great courses at the resort.

The fame of the Ocean Course could give the impression that golf is all Kiawah has to offer. Conde Nast Traveler readers have voted this South Carolina resort among the "Top 20" Islands in The World for resort activities.  In fact, even with the fantastic golf, it's the children that may have the most fun on a "golf vacation" to Kiawah.

There’s Kamp Kiawah – a supervised, fun-filled activity program for ages 3 to 11. Established two decades ago, Kamp Kiawah keeps children enthralled with its Pirate Escapades, Nature Adventure Days, Tye Dye Days, Sand Sculpting, Hula Contests and Relay Races and more. It also allows parents some time to participate in island adventures of their own.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort has created a Teen Program specifically for the most discriminating of youths. On the list of seasonal activities are Teen Survivor, Late Night Movies, Photo Scavenger Hunts, Basketball and Volleyball Tournaments, Dance Contests and more. Ocean_seining_kiawah

Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, bicycling, cookouts, oyster roasts, sing-a-longs, and nature walks are just a few of the other extraordinary activities that are afforded to guests of Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

A fantastic spa and AAA Five-Diamond hotel top-off the resort's unbeatable offerings.  The memories of family vacation to Kiawah Island Resort will be treasured by every member of the family.

We love our kids, but sometimes all parents need a relaxing, rejuvinating getaway.

Northern California’s premier golf, food and wine event returns to The Course At Wente Vineyards March 31-April 6, when the Nationwide Tour makes its only stop in the greater Bay Area. Founded in 1883, Wente Vineyards, located near Livermore, California, is the country’s oldest continuously operated family-owned winery. Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort

It's hard to believe, but at the base of Western Maryland's Evitts Mountain, in the Rocky Gap State Park,  sits the only Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in the state, the Golden Bear at Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort.

Maryland_tripwiser The absence of other Maryland golf courses holding the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course distinction is testimony to the difficulty of obtaining the title.  The course has recently obtained multiple awards, such as the 2006 "Greens of Distinction," Corporate and Incentive Travel,  2007 "4-Star," Golf Digest, and 2007/2008 Zagat's "Best Places to Play."

As with a growing number of golf resorts these days, golf isn't the only thing you get.  This month, Wine Enthusiast magazine gave the resort it's coveted Award of Distinction.  The the resort's Lakeside Restaurant earned Wine Enthusiast's praise by being one of the country's most wine-friendly restaurants.

In addition to the championship golf course and fine dining options, the popular multi-amenity resort offers:

  • 215 guest rooms
  • Fabulous spa with innumerable, relaxing treatments;
  • Extensive meeting programs encompassing 15,000+ square feet of banquet and meeting space and numerous service options;
  • Family and children's activities (horseback riding, paintball, climbing wall, rappelling, whitewater rafting, canoeing and a Scales & Tales animal program by the campfire);
  • Corporate team building programs through Western Maryland Adventures;
  • Special weddings programs by the lake with both indoor and outdoor settings;
  • Beautiful lakeside pavilions.

For every member of the family, and most any occasion, the Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort deserves a look when planning your next family vacation, golf trip, or mom and dad getaway.

The holiday season is rarely as relaxing as it looks from the viewpoint of July or August.  If you’re looking for a truly relaxing vacation after a hectic holiday season, and activities for the family, consider a visit to The Spa at Plantation, which opened this week, at The Plantation Golf Resort & Spa in Crystal River, Florida.

Kings Island Theme Park and Golf

One of the most entertaining family getaways is a visit to Paramount's Kings Island, a theme park near Cincinnati, Ohio.  But, the park is only the beginning of the fun.

Recently voted the best theme park in the Midwest for families, Kings Island has something for the whole family. Nickelodeon Universe is for the wee ones and has 18 rides, a Dora the Explorer live show, and a great place to cool off in Sponge Bob's Bikini Bottom Bash.

There are other live shows, tons of rides and great food, but the roller coasters are unequaled.  From the new Firehawk to the old standard that many call the best coaster in the world, The Beast, which is the longest wooden roller coaster in the world.

For the golfers, there's the Golf Center at Kings Island. Featuring two Jack Nicklaus designed courses (the championship Grizzly and the family oriented Bruin), and a state of the art practice facility. The center is open to the public, but has all the feel and amenities of a country club: pro shop, locker room, restaurant, grille, sports bar, as well as meeting and banquet rooms.

A great place to stay near the park and the golf center is the Marriott Cincinnati Northeast.  The hotel is well appointed. The rooms have brand new, large flat-screen TV's, and the beds are the most comfortable ever. The hotel's restaurant staff are also very much in tune to guest needs. Two pools and a fitness room add to the allure of the hotel. The Marriott Northeast is less than five miles from the park.  It's also near all the shopping anyone could ever want to do. Greatamerican

Depending on the time of year, taking in a Cincinnati Reds baseball game or Bengals football game is essential. The park is only about 20 miles from Great American Ballpark, home of the oldest professional baseball team, the Reds, and Paul Brown Stadium, home of the Bengals.  Both parks are something to behold.

Cincinnati has it all. The best part? It's close to Kentucky.
